Late Monday Comedy

I was just wrapping up a long Monday by looking over the "experts" picks on ESPN for the National Championship Game.

Try not to laugh...

Christian Fauria
WISCONSIN beating ALABAMA

Yep, Christian thinks Becky will win the National Title this year.

Ivan Maisel
ALABAMA beating IOWA

Ivan doesn't go to the extreme of picking Iowa to actually win the NC, but expecting them to make it there is comical.

Oddly, nobody had the Gophs winning the B10 and the rest of the NC picks were all made up of the usual suspects.

If an 11-1 Becky team wins the NC over ALA, but we win in Madison and own the Axe, who wins the war?

It's On!

Alright, time to start figuring out Football Challenge 2010. Games start on Thursday, get me your picks by 12:00 Noon on Thursday.

If you owe your $60 still - get it to me by Thursday. Let's clean up all this before games start so we don't have to worry about it. Thanks.

In case you need it - here's the list of week 1 games - send me your 15 picks

College Football!!!!

One week out from the official start to the season, and I have nothing but College Football on the mind. Need proof, here are 10 things you need to know if you don't already:

1. MDTN QB Dwight Dasher
The week 1 opponent for the Gophs one week from tonight is favored and getting hype because of this guy...uh-oh. Reports now are that it is unlikely this fella is going to play due to an investigation over a gambling loan he took from an 80 year old guy and didn't re-pay. The NCAA isn't so much concerned with the lack of repayment as they are the alleged high stakes poker game he was playing in. The line has already dropped from 4.5 to 2.5 in most places, so this is clearly a major issue. His backup looks completely inept from the few high school videos I could find on him...yep, high school because he has never a played a down of D1 football. Gophers can win with Dasher on the field, Gophers will destroy without him on the field. Maybe Dwight wants to enter the Football Challenge instead this season, sounds like our kind of guy.

2. FRIDAY on BTN
The much anticipated Gopher Preview show will be FRI, like tomorrow, on the BTN at 7pm. It's sandwiched in between a couple of beauties...LoMo and MB3 housing WIS and of course the Halloween miracle of 2009 where AWEB throws for 800 yards against Sparty No! It sounds like we'll get some good action from the scrimmage last Saturday, so it's probably worth a watch.

3. MGRAY - WR?
I guess it's pretty much official after the sound byte I saw last night. Brew stated that MGray is the #2 QB, but he also may be the STARTER at WR! The guy has the best hands and is the biggest and strongest skill player on the team, so I love the idea. Enough with the bizarro trickeration we tried to do last season with him, put him at WR consistently and lets use this fella while we have him. He and McKnight on the ends with Stoudermire, Green, and Allen running across the slot looks like a great mix. Brew basically said that MGray was standing beside him on the sidelines and flat out said, I'm not doing anything to help the team over here. So the change was made and we have our own version of Marcus McNutt (as much as I hate to admit it, this Hogeye QB turned WR is lethal and was gigantic for them in 2009). You can't worry about injury or his backup QB duties - let's go balls out to win from the start...I love it!

The final 7 items all come from Twitter and are all thing I got from just this morning...seriously, get on Twitter and follow the right people and you will soon not know how you lived without this constant entertainment for so long.

4. $450/MONTH - where do I sign?
The SC hotel scandal has finally released some details. Players were staying in a decent hotel for $450/month, but unfortunately they have now all moved out. The worst part is, these are some good players and are on suspension for a while due to these extra benefits. This has kind of been a non-story because it's in SEC country and everyone does stuff like this....the Gophers would have probably gotten the death penalty by now if 1/2 the team was living at the Holiday Inn.

5. ILLINI, another man down
Illinois, who already has a horrendous defense they are trying to improve, lost a starting S for the season with a torn achilles. Sounds painful - but it's just another step in the eventual doom of the Zooker...R.I.P.

6. DICKROD being DICKROD
In a weak move that should surprise nobody, DickRod will wait until the Friday night before the game against UCONN to announce his starting QB. This is a really desperate move from a really desperate team and it tells me that he has no f*cking idea what he want to do at QB and MICH will be a train-wreck for the 3rd and final year of the DickRod regime.

7. IOWA is catching breaks already!
So the Hogeyes open with E.Illinois...frightening. But the one player who may have put the Hogeyes on their heels a little bit will now miss the opener. Florida RB transfer guy is now hurt and won't play for E.ILL in their trip to the farmland. Iowa will squeak this one out with 3 defense TD's 21-2.

8. TEASERS
Some betting advice from a pro in Vegas known as Teddy Covers around Teasers. He says he only plays teasers in the NFL and only in the 2 game variety where you bet 11 to win 10 and reduce the juice. Not nearly daring enough for me, but probably a smart strategy. He says the best teaser plays are taking a team at -7.5 or -8.5 down to under a FG favorite and taking a dog of 1.5 or 2.5 up over a TD. Moving the line past the magic numbers is the way to play these. I'm not a big teaser guy, but I could be talked into it if absolutely necessary.

9. EDSBS (Everydayshouldbesaturday.com)
This is a great website you should check out. They had a GREAT quote I read on there today:

"We've been told this is due to the brutal comedown from a brown liquor high into cold, hungover reality, which is why we still recommend vodka for maximum drunken rooting efficiency. Vodka: Keeping EDSBS In The Game and Cheering Since 1994."

I couldn't agree more. Vodka is the best cheering medicine for a long-term football Saturday. Believe me, I tried this in Vegas last year with some great results...however, it did hamper my Sunday a little bit. These guys are a couple of die-hards that have tons of hilarious articles throughout the week. A good read if you ever get bored at work.

10. PURPLE Pride
Okay, so I have 1 NFL item for you. So Sidney is apparently a moron and it has thrown off our plans for the entire season. Enter Javon Walker and Greg Camarillo. Forgive me if I'm not overly excited. Walker just can't have anything left and Camarillo isn't quite a Rice replacement. So the offense becomes instantly less dynamic and effective...which scares me for out 2010 chances. Lots of doom and gloom predictions going around out there for the Purple, and I have to say I'm starting to believe it. 8-8 might not be out of the question in 2010.

Set your DVR now for Friday night on BTN and next Thursday on ESPNU...the season has arrived.

I have not received any picks yet (except my own) so I will send the games out again on Monday. Remember to send over your picks by Thursday at Noon...like one full week from today.

I also need $$$ from these guys:

HEINERT & CORCORAN - will get this when I see you at work
ROE - crickets...send me a check, you can't steal our $ for 3 years and then run!
KOBOW - crickets...send me a check or swing by with cash, whatever works.

Only 7 days guys - scrounge together the spare change and buy yourself a full season of enjoyment.

Week 1 Lines

We are 10 days out from the start of the Football season, so I figured I'd send these out again. I need your picks by NOON ON THURSDAY 9/2/10 (not this Thursday, next Thursday).

For Week 1 we will be picking 15 NCAA Games and no NFL Games, since there are none.

I'm still waiting on $$$ from the following guys: ROE, KOBOW, HEINERT, CORCORAN, OLSON - please send me the $60 by the time the games start, which is 10 days from now.

So, whenever you feel comfortable sending in your picks, the Challenge has officially begun!

Send me your top 15 winners against the spread from these games - lines are based on the opening line listed on USATODAY.

Antonio Cromartie

Check this out - trying to remember his kids' names...he has like 4 kids that are 3 years old, must have been a busy year!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5qzQ2HBh0s

2 weeks away! 5 thoughts for Thursday

2 weeks from tonight...Gophers at MDTN, I'm feeling better and better about this game every day. They have Dasher at QB, lives off his speed...I think our fast LB's can neutralize this. They have some injuries on their OL, I think we'll be able to stop the running game. Tinsley is going to play, many thought he would be suspended for the opener, but Hacksaw is eligible. Basically, I'm marking it as a W already.

1. BYU
WTF are the Mormons doing? So they are finally legitimizing their MWC with the coming addition of BOISE and now they are bailing to become an independent? How does this make any sense? You finally have enough fire power to make your conference a potential auto qualifier for the BCS and you want to go run your own program? BYU is not ND, nobody cares about BYU. Who is going to want to play these guys? They are going to end up with 8 road games per year because good BCS teams are not going to go to Provo in the middle of the season when conference play is going on. This is insane.

2. MWC
I guess the MWC was really sad by their loss, as they added Fresno St. and Nevada within about 1 hour of hearing that BYU was leaving. Why couldn't the big conference hoopla shake out this fast? We had NEB to the B10 rumors flying for 2 months before anything finally happened. While BYU decides on a whim to leave and they are replaced instantly with 2 other teams. The funniest thing I read was that the MWC is really excited for the Fresno St - SD St rivalry and the UNLV - Nevada rivalry that will now be possible....really, that gets you excited? BYU is going to be sad that they left.

3. Tate Forcier
Rumors were around last night that he was requesting a transfer from DickRod and his program. Then about 30 minutes later there was a quote from his dad saying that it was comical and he wouldn't allow it. Wow, Dad throwing the hammer down on Tate's transfer, interesting. Obviously, there is something going on here and like I predicted 3 months ago, I don't think he'll be the starter in 2010. Denard Robinson is closer to Pat White than Tate is, and Pat White is the most perfect QB for this system that there has ever been. Michigan continues to be team turmoil. They also lost their star CB for the season this week - I'm really sad for them. I guess I am sad that we won't ever get to play a DickRod lead Wolverines team again...yeah, he's not going to last until 2011.

4. Alabama - ESPN Special
I watched this last night and it was great. I love the behind the scenes stuff that ESPN has been doing more and more with College Football, and this was about the best I've seen. Lots of stuff from the pre-season practices, lots of stuff with Saban, some interesting behind the scenes player stuff...just a good watch. I'd recommend it - it's ESPN so I'm sure they'll be replaying it 40 times over the next 3 weeks.

5. Twins
5 games up with one more coming tonight. Isn't it fun to kick the Sox when they're down? I think a W tonight basically wraps this thing up. The question now becomes, what's the deal w/Morneau? It sounds more and more positive each day, but what does the club do when he returns? How can you possibly sit Kubel, Cuddy, or Thome right now? I get it that Thome was brought in as a PH, but he's raking right now and needs to be in the lineup. There aren't many holes in this lineup right now, but obviously Morneau will find a spot once he returns. This is the first year I feel like we actually have a lineup that can compete in the playoffs...but I still have a few doubts with the staff. All have had ups and downs lately, but hopefully the bullpen can remain strong because I think we'll have to win some slugfests in the playoffs.

Official Gophers 2010 Predictions

Even though I am now infinitely more excited for the Purple's season to begin, the Maroon and Gold will be the first ones to fire up on Sept. 2nd, and honestly, Brew's Crew is still the can't miss show in town for this guy.

Despite all of the "expert" predictions which have the Gophers anywhere from 10th to 11th in the B10 for 2010, I see it differently. Why are the experts crushing our hopes for this year? A few reasons:

1. Only 2 returning "starters" on defense. The fatal flaw with this logic is that 3 of our 4 projected starting DL saw significant time last season, 2 of our projected LB's played a lot and started in spots last season, and all 4 of our DB's were starters at the end of last season. So the 2 returning starters label is extremely misleading. Granted, we will be younger than last season, but we are also much more athletic and fast - plus we are in year 2 of Cosgrove/Lee's scheme...2 years in a row with the same DC - a new record! This is the number one issue that all the preseason mags are crushing us on when justifying their 11th place prediction...and it holds no water.

2. Another new OC, Weber was terrible. I'll give them these 2 facts, both are correct but they don't necessarily mean we will be as poor on offense this season. Jeff Horton is a totally different OC than last year's wunderkind Jedd Fisch. Fisch was a risky hire, who embraced NFL schemes and a very complex offense with no dedication to running the football. Shockingly, we don't have NFL caliber minds or talent at QB and WR to execute this complex offense and we looked lost throughout most of the year. Our 2009 offense was much like our 2007 defense with Everett Withers, who came straight from the NFL and installed NFL schemes on D, which we couldn't handle, and allowed 1 bazillion yards and points on our way to 1-11. It's easier to overcome a shitty offense than it is a shitty defense, and that's why things weren't as bad last season. So back to Horton, he's a lifer OC guy who had a brief HC stint and wasn't great. He's a guy who could actually be here for 10 years if we want him. The scheme revolves around running the football and doing a lot of simple plays really well with a couple minor wrinkles mixed in...sound familiar...it's basically the WIS, IOWA, and Glen Mason plan on offense. Not quite as run heavy as Mase once was, but we're definitely going to see more of a commitment to the ground game this season. Couple that with our Senior QB who is entering his 4th year as a starter, and I think the offense will be much improved. Weber was god awful last season, but I don't think he or the WR's (who were forced to make reads off the line on every play to determine what route to run) ever fully embraced Fisch's scheme. Horton is implementing the same scheme that AWEB was brought in to run when Mase recruited him, which can only make him better. He's back to his old throwing style, and he is a 5th year senior...you know this has to turn out better than what we saw last season. So this argument from the experts is also a little off because the offense made good changes and the QB will be better so the PPG and YPG will improve over 2009...I guarantee it.

3. OL is terrible. Again, I can't totally disagree with this because we have been the last 2 years. But we finally have some depth up front and those guys that have been getting run over the last 2 seasons are still all back and are finally upperclassmen. We even have some younger guys pushing these guys for starting spots during camp - so there are options and depth which hasn't been there in the past. I still believe we have the right guy running things in Tim Davis. His track record is too good to believe he can't get the job done. It's a line that is full of giant men that are built for run blocking but a little slow on pass blocking...so last year we threw the hell out of the ball and the OL really struggled at times. They actually played better toward the end of the season, and the size and strength, by all accounts, has greatly improved with some of the younger guys. This group was challenged on the 1st day of practice by coach Brew, and they realize that this offense is going to go as far as this group of 8-10 will take them. We've got some nastiness up front that's been lacking for the last 2 years, and I look for a big turnaround with an extremely experienced OL in 2010 and a re-commitment to the running game.

4. No WR's - Decker gone = no passing game. Once again, based on the last 2 year's results, it's hard to argue with this point. But if you look a little deeper you can see the potential. Our #1 will be DaJon McKnight, who is in his 5th full year of football - the guy has a 43" vertical leap and showed flashes last season once ED went out that he has next level potential. Plus a guy in only his 5th year of organized football is still learning the game and can only get better. Same goes for Stoudermire, our #2 WR. He was a HS QB, then recruited as a DB, but switched to WR only at the half way point of his 1st season with the Gophers. So he's been a WR for 1.5 years...once again, he can only get better. Both of these guys are freaky good athletes, we just need them to be good WR's. Brandon Green is our #3, he needs to blossom. He was a highly touted recruit who has been kind of blah through 2 years. He had a couple big moments as a freshman, but had a tough year in 2009. The athletes are there, and I think an improved running game is only going to help these guys. Plus we bring in former WR from the Broncos Steve Watson, apparently one of the best route running and blocking WR's in the NFL during his time, to coach this young talent and teach them the Eric Decker characteristics they need to become good WR's and not just good athletes. The de-emphasis on the passing game is going to produce better results for these guys than we've seen the last couple of years. Teams will not be able to drop 7 or 8 into coverage if we can develop a running game.

5. The schedule is too tough to improve. The schedule is brutal, but if you want to play with the big kids you have to win some games like this. Beating up ILL, IND, NW, and a bunch of non-conference patsies proves nothing. I like taking on the challenges - either step up and be great or give it a shot and realize you're not at that level. The Mase years left us always wondering what kind of team we had until we would get throttled by PSU 44-7. This year's slate gives us 3 big non-conference challenges before we even think about B10 play, and the conference slate sets up great for a surprise season by hosting nearly every big game at TCF.

So, I've broken down the knocks on the Gophers this year and at least got you doubting the doom and gloom predictions by all of the experts at this point...so what's going to happen...

at MDTN - we win this game. We can physically dominate them up front, our defense will surprise them, their QB has a tendency to throw picks...we win a close one: 1-0

SDAK - win, come on...like we even play close to a team like this: 2-0

USC - I'm not crazy, we won't win this one, but hopefully a nice showing and a great recruiting weekend: 2-1

NILL - a night game at TCF...we can't lose: 3-1

NW - we start the B10 off right and beat the Cats like we should have done 2 years ago when it REALLY mattered! Still pissed about that one: 4-1

at WIS - this will be fun. WIS will be coming off a nice close W in MSU over Sparty, we'll be coming off a close W over NW, homecoming for WIS, I'll be there hammered in Maroon and Gold embarassing my wife and the people who mistakenly invited me...but I just can't predict a W here. I'm just hoping for a cover: 4-2

at PUR - coming off an emotional letdown in WIS, we'll be flat here and lose: 4-3

PSU - off a bad loss at PUR, the club comes out with some fire. PSU is coming in off a bye and could reasonably be 3-3 or at best 4-2 at this point. Anything great will be out of the picture and they have a surprisingly decent MICH team coming in next week. We get to their bunk QB early and pull off a VEGAS miracle and win this thing: 5-3

OHIOST - Halloween weekend, evening game at TCF....but this is the top team in the nation. I'm optimistic, but beating OHIOST ain't happening: 5-4

at MSU - payback game for Sparty, we go down: 5-5

at ILL - rebound game against an already fired Ron Zook and team...Gophers win in Champaign again: 6-5

IOWA - we are off a bye and NEED a rivalry win more than anything in the world. The Hogeyes just lost a heartbreaker to OHIOST to fall to 6-5 and they limp in to TCF for the end of their uber-disappointing season. GOPHERS WIN: 7-5

There you go - don't even need to play out the games because this is how it will go. 2 Trophies in the cases, and a TON of optimism going into 2011 with everyone back but AWEB...I'm smelling the Roses.

Call me crazy.

18 days and counting...

18 days until kickoff at 6:30 for our Golden Gophers. What does this mean...

Get your money in to play

I have been paid by 1/2 the field, with 5 outstanding...ROE, KOBOW, HEINERT, CORCORAN, ROB OLSON...the other 5 are in. Please get me cash if I'm going to be seeing you sometime soon (ROEJOE on Saturday) or send me a check in the mail. $60 pays for the whole season, $40 for regular and $20 for playoffs/bowls.

QUICK THOUGHTS

1. Ruling at the end of the PGA was dumb but technically correct. I guess I don't exactly play at the professional level, but what Johnson did gave him no advantage and changed nothing so I think it's stupid...but I'm not losing any sleep over it. I just hope much bigger tournaments like the ROEJOE aren't decided on such a technicality like this for the coming weekend.

2. Slowey - the outrage over this is ridiculous. I get it that throwing another 20 pitches probably won't ruin the guy's career like some have said. But honestly, I heard an angry guy last night saying that "Gardy ruined my son's chance to see a no-hitter and I can never forgive him for that." Really? Wow, stopping no-hitters as an unforgivable offense, that's a new one. The I flip on KFAN over lunch and the mindless baseball people they have on there are taking calls about how it was such an outrage. Has there ever been such an outrage over nothing?

3. I had a premonition last night around my favorite club...7-5. That's going to be my official prediction with details coming later this week in between brutally long projects I have to do for my job that actually pays me. It will happen, I'll explain how in my Gopher preview this week.

4. MLB Bets - so after going 3-10 over a 5 day period I was kind of done with MLB...but then I went 4-0 over the last 3 days and totally redeemed myself! There's only 2 real weeks left without football, so why not try to build the bankroll up a bit so I have more to play with when the fun stuff starts?!

5. Purple Pride - did you see that beat down...I didn't see much. So what did we learn, the Rams suck and that's about it. This was a not a shock. The preseason is the most worthless waste of time ever and I don't think I can watch it. Instead I spent most of my free moments (all 30 minutes of them) watching old NCAA games from last season where they actually had entertainment value. I've already heard the Sage love and T-Jack hate being thrown around, which is 100% insanity. T-Jack played 1 drive!! He did okay, end of story. Nothing can be gained from watching the preseason besides figuring out who is hurt and for how long. After having said that, I like the UNDER in the MNF game tonight (NYG-NYJ 33.5)

We're 2 weeks out - send me your money if you haven't already!!

In case you haven't seen these yet...here's the list for week 1. Don't send me your picks now, I'll re-send these a week before the games actually happen...but I thought this might make the last couple hours of the day a little more fun!

Camp Opens - 1st Lines Posted!

It is the official 1st day of camp for the Gophers of 2010, couldn't be more excited to finally start closing in on the start of the season.

Also, the opening week lines are posted - I'll throw them out soon, but here's the one that matters:

MN
MDTN -4.5

Getting 4.5 at a Sun Belt team...get used to this though, because we'll probably be dogs in 9 or 10 of our games this season! If our defense comes together and plays like I think it can, I love idea of getting points!

More to come.

NFC Preview 2010

Time for the other half of the league...obviously, with the news today these have changed a bit, but let's hope #4 makes the right choice and proves me wrong. As of now, I'll assume he's out.

EAST

DAL
Everybody's darling once again this season. As I posted earlier, they still have Wade Phillips, which means they still won't win a damn thing. They are the odds on favorite in Vegas to win the NFC, if I could take a Cowboys or the field pick I would take the field. I give at least 5 teams a better chance at winning the NFC than the 'Boys. The offense was and is good. The defense is actually just average, despite all the hype that tells us otherwise.

NYG
This is not an 8-8 team. Last year they struggled through a ton of injuries to important big guys on both sides of the ball. They also played the 7th toughest schedule in the league last year. Eli put them at a -7 in TO margin, the defense underachieved...see where I'm going with this? Don't count out a veteran club with a good coach and a good QB. This team is my pick to win the East.

PHI
Finally, after years of rumors and good old-fashioned Philly hatred, DMc is gone. In his place is Kevin Kolb, who I'm not sold on quite yet. I think he'll be fine, just like every other QB that has replaced DMc over the last few years with his chronic injuries, but to think that this is an upgrade as some Philly faithful are putting it is just dumb. The offense was good last season, the D was average. I look for both of those units to hold to that level in 2010. They benefitted from a +15 TO margin, which is likely going to change this season, which means this team goes down a bit and misses the playoffs.

WAS
Shanahan is the new sheriff in town in WAS. They lost a ton of close ones last season (2-7) and had a horrible offense. If there is one thing Shanahan can help, it's the offense. They have a stable of RB's that look like and unreal Fantasy team from about 4 years ago (Portis, LJ, Parker), and they acquired the aforementioned D.McNabb to play QB. I always kind of liked Campbell, but McNabb is a clear upgrade. The D wasn't awful last season and a -11 TO margin didn't help things either. I think Shanahan is a winner who needed a fresh start and he'll do some really good thing in WAS this season. This is a sneaky team, who I have tentatively positioned in 4th in the East, but totally wouldn't surprise me if they ended up in a WC slot. New coach + New QB = unpredictable.

NORTH
MIN
Good thing I didn't write this yesterday. I was about 99.99% sure that #4 would be back and the Purple were in for another great year. I'm not saying we're all of a sudden a 5 win team without him, but we clearly can't be at the Super Bowl level until we see what T-Jackalacka has done over the last year without playing. 2009 was great, but we really didn't run the ball effectively and our pass D was also pretty poor. We played an easy schedule (#29) and won 75% of our close games. A lot of things went the way of the Purple in 2009, so it's likely going to go back the other way for 2010. Offensively, we won't be as prolific with the pass and AD will need to be back in rookie form (1800/15 TD). The line must improve, this was kind of a hidden weakness last year because people just look at names and not necessarily the way we played. I think the D will continue to be hungry, but they have to figure something out in the secondary. I'm not counting on Griffin for much, so someone is going to have to step up at CB. The S play can only be better, they were atrocious last year in my opinion. Overall, without #4, I will put this team as a WC in 2010.

GB
I hate to do this, but with the news of today, GB is the clear pick to win the North. They did a everything pretty well last season, but one thing that is going against them is their TO margin. +24 last season....this is ridiculous. They averaged a +1.5 TO per game last year, an insanely high amount that should be nearly impossible to repeat in 2010. And with that, they still only won 11 games and a WC spot. Sadly, this is a no-brainer pick to win the North over the #4-less Purple.

CHI
Lots of changes on this squad in 2010, perhaps the last year of Lovie. The pressure is on, so he decided to get a new OC...the mad scientist Mike Martz. So we have an emotional jerk of an OC to go with our emotional wreck of a QB, but yet they spent cash on Chester in the off-season to be the #2 RB. You know how Martz rolls, they will talk about running the ball, but by week 3 it will be Cutler airing it out 50 times per game. The WR corp is not outstanding and Cutler had a hard enough time not turning it over last season without an extra 15 attempts per game. On D, they spent a ton on Peppers, a guy who many fear will cash that first check and then decide it's not worth the effort any more and be one of those historic FA busts. The defense is probably going to be good, but with a quick strike, pass happy offense, the numbers might not be as pretty as you would expect. I see nothing more than 6 wins for CHI in 2010.

DET
It is the common consensus to state that this team is getting better, so I'll tag along and believe that as well. But my question is, how much better? I like the QB, I think he'll be fine. They have some weapons on offense, but they still only scored 16 ppg in 2009. So a big improvement is to score about 20 ppg? That still puts them near the bottom of the league. The defense was awful in 2009, they made some upgrade, so now they'll give up 27 ppg instead of 31? They had a -16 TO ratio last year, so an improvement on this will be expected. But they still have a D that doesn't force a ton of TO's and a 2nd year QB with a questionable OL and some marginal small RB's. I guess what I'm trying to say is that even an improved Lions team is worth a 4th place finish in the North and a Top 8 pick in the Draft in 2011.

SOUTH
NO
The defending champ will be nice again this year. The offense was unstoppable last season, they ran it and threw it very well. The defense was forcing a lot a turnovers but they stunk against the run in 2009. Definitely a playoff team in 2010, probably division champs...but not a repeat Super Bowl.

ATL
I really like this team for 2010. They were good last year against a tough schedule. I think the offense matures a little this season and really surprises people. I love the coaching staff, and I think they are a sure fire playoff team in 2010 as well.

CAR
Finally, the DelHomme era is over in CAR, somehow Fox survived the entire time and will be fighting for his job for like the 4th year and a row. The D was good, as usual, the offense was very average as usual in 2009. They also played a very tough schedule in 2009. Matt Moore is the guy under center, I have a lot of questions there. The defense lost Peppers, but he might not be as big of a loss as some people think. Overall, this team is in need of a makeover at the top, so this will be Fox's swan song.

TB
2nd year of the Morris regime after a rough start in 2009. They went 1-4 in close games and had a horrible offense...which is a theme with these awful teams. It's also year 2 of Josh Freeman, who I kind of like. The defense struggled as well in 2009, so they'll probably improve a bit...but this is a big rebuilding job and with a 2nd year QB, this will not be a great year for the Bucs.

WEST

SF
Yep, I'm picking Samurai Mike and the 9'ers to win the West. The division is that bad. Alex Smith will lead this team to the playoffs...okay, I'm kind of laughing after that sentence. The defense is pretty good, but the offense still has a way to go. They can't throw, so they probably aren't making any noise in January, but this division is so bad I think I'll put them as the West champs hosting the Purple in round 1.

ARI
The grocery bagger has finally given up and turned the keys over to party guy Leinert...at least temporarily. I bet he'll be out by Week 5 and Derek Anderson will be in. With Anderson under center this team will throw a lot of deep balls to Fitz and try to revive an average running game in a late divisional charge. However, this was not really that great of a team last season, and they true flaws will be obvious this year as they fall short of the playoffs.

SEA
Pete Carroll takes over with guru Jedd Fisch as the QB coach. A bad offense can only get better with Carroll and hopefully a healthy Hasselback. The defense was not great last year either. They stopped the run, but were torched through the air. If I had to pick a totally under the radar sleeper playoff team, this would be it. I don't think they have the talent to win much, but once again, this division is so bad that getting a hot streak with the top QB in the division could propel them to the playoffs.

STL
Finally, the 32nd team. A guaranteed last place finish for STL, even in this bad division. Very very bad team in 2009 that scored less than 11 ppg, but now they have a super high paid 1st year rookie QB who I'm not convinced is going to be a great NFL player. The defense was really bad last year as well, and will be again. #1 pick 2 years in a row...maybe, top 3 next year...definitely.

To recap:
NYG, GB, NO, SF to win the division
MIN, ATL as the WC's

I'll go crazy and pick the NYG to get to the big one with a victory over ATL in the NFC title game.

PATRIOTS over GIANTS in a Super Bowl grudge match.

Uh-oh...

You knew he couldn't stay out of the news for too long...Mr. FAVRE is apparently having a press release today to announce, as speculated, that he is done.

So even though this sounds definitive, I have a hard time believing this is the end. Assuming this happens as reported I see this going a couple of different ways:

1) He changes his mind yet again and comes back DURING the season and saves a 2-5 team after the Sunday night game at Lambeau.

2) It's a facade, and he actually is just buying himself some more time before coming in to camp...but he's there for the opener.

3) For real - he's done...and it's time to panic...a lot

Of these options, I give #3 as the least likely...I just can't believe this might be the case. I can see him drawing it out as long as possible and getting some extra time, but I really didn't think there was any way he was not returning this season.

How do we move on...Sage, TJack, Joe Webb...pray for us. This team INSTANTLY goes from Super Bowl contender to non-playoff team in the blink of an eye. This is why you solve your QB problems in the off-season when you have a chance to grab a guy like McNabb. I am betting on TJACK being the guy now since he was #2 last year and Sage still appears to suck as he was picked off 3 times by Chris Cook a couple of days ago.

Quick schedule rundown with T-Jackalacka under center...
L, L, W = 1-2 into the bye
L,L,L,L = tough stretch puts us to 1-6 and out of the race
WWWWWW = win 6 in a row and start to figure it out (7-6)
W,L,W = 9-7...actually better than I thought.

This schedule isn't that tough. 1st half is very difficult, 2nd half is extremely easy. If T-Jackalacka can pull out a couple of surprise W's early this could be a 10 or 11 win team.

Nevermind the panic button...we're fine.

MLB August 1st Check In

Quick MLB look, only 2 months to go!

AL

EAST
NYY and TB - looks like a fight to the finish we these 2. Both are playing extremely well, and will both be in the playoffs. BOS needs to stop pretending they have a chance...trending the wrong way and they might as well focus on the soon to be AFC Champion Patriots.

CENTRAL
Looks like this is becoming a true 2 horse race with all of DET's issues right now. MIN and CWS are virtually identical right now, but the Twins have actually hit much better than CWS and pitching has been about even. One other note, KC was a -78 run differential for the month...tough to do when you only play about 25 games.

WEST
I still really like TEXAS, but I'm just trying to decide whether or not they can be dangerous in OCT. I'm leaning no right now, but they've got 2 months to prove me wrong. LAA is trying to stay in it, but they need to make up some ground fast to make this a race for SEPT. I think they need to gain at least 4-5 games in the standings during AUG...which is unlikely.

NL

East

ATL-PHILLY are battling for the top spot. Most think Oswalt will tilt to scales to PHI, but I'm sticking with Hotlanta. Nobody in the East plays well on the road, and PHI has more road games left. ATL's pitching is just too good for me to go against them. FLA and NYM are trying to hold on, but neither is a serious threat so I won't even consider it at this point.

Central

Cards vs. Reds...give me the experience and pitching of STL in this battle. I've been on the "Reds are getting close" bandwagon for about 3 years, but STL is the pick here. Pencil them into the playoffs.

West

All of these top teams are playing pretty well right now. COL and LAD dropped a few games this month, but SF really picked it up. SF and SD are the clear leaders right now, and I love what both did around the deadline. I'm holding on to my COL pick and expecting an AUG/SEPT surge...but they don't play the same kind of game as the top 2, by that I mean they can't pitch nearly as well. But if they can turn some of these late series into slugfests, then they have a chance.

NL Wildcard
The losers of all of the above races have a shot at the WC, it's wide open. I tend to think pitching rules all, especially in September, so I'm leaning SF/PHI on this one.

Football Challenge 2010-11

Well Gentlemen, we're a mere 30 days away from kicking off the gambling, er...football season for 2010. I have 10 guys on this list, 2 over last year's regular season numbers. Here's the rundown for this season:

1. $60 to play ($40 for regular season, $20 for Playoff/Bowls)
- figured I would do this all at once this year to make it simpler

Please send off a check in the mail for $60 or pay me in person or via paypal...whatever works best for you guys. I need the money by kickoff on September 2nd, so you have exactly 30 days to scrounge up enough to play for this year. Please let me know if you have any questions.

2. If you don't want to play - let me know. I mean it's only $60 for a full 5 months of entertainment...but if you're out, let me know so I can find someone else.

3. Picks will remain the same as last year with a slight modification. 10 NCAA/5 NFL games each regular week. However, week 1 will consist of 15 NCAA games since the NCAA is the only game in town for 1 week. Also, once the NCAA is over and the NFL is the only thing going we will only be picking 10 NFL games and not 15 like the last couple of years. I decided it was asking too much to pick winners in nearly every game for a single week and wanted to make this a little more manageable...if I'm wrong let me know and I can be persuaded back to the old way.

4. Picks, as always, will be due on Thursday so I have time to compile and send out a list to everyone so you know what to watch for.

5. We will continue to use the beginning lines posted on the USATODAY website for all games, no line changes throughout the week - just the opening lines.

6. PAYOUTS
10 guys X $60 each = $600
$400 for regular season, $200 for playoffs/bowls
Regular Season = $360 for 1st, $40 for 2nd
Playoffs = $180 for 1st, $20 for 2nd

I think that is all I have - other questions, please ask. Send me your money before September 2nd...only 30 days away!!
